Open repositories in Finland
This section provides information about the open repositories in Finnish higher education institutions which contain materials related to/or including music. These materials include e.g. theses, articles, sheet music and concert recordings.
Please note that in some repositories, certain content is not openly available online and may require a visit to the library of the respective institution.
WHAT IS AN OPEN REPOSITORY?
An open repository is a system designed for storing and publishing scientific publications online. The content of open repositories can vary significantly depending on the background organization. They may include text-based publications such as articles, books, theses, and various series publications, as well as audiovisual materials like images, audio recordings, and videos.
There are about 20 open repositories in Finland, which are either maintained by individual organizations or shared by multiple institutions. The largest open repository in Finland is Theseus, which contains theses and publications from 24 Universities of Applied Sciences, dating from approximately 2009 onward.
Universities in Finland do not have a shared open repository; instead, each university maintains its own. In addition to the aforementioned repositories, other institutions such as the Finnish Government and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare also maintain their own open repositories.
Doria is a centralised open repository and archive management application maintained by the National Library of Finland. Its content is produced by several different organizations.
For example, publications from Åbo Akademi can be found in Doria. These include digitized concert programs from the 19th century as well as theses completed at Åbo Akademi on topics such as musicology and music education/pedagogy.
Doria also includes a collection called Raita – Music from Old Records, which features Finnish sound recordings that are in the public domain. Raita is part of the Sounds of the Century project.
Jyx is an open repository of the University of Jyväskylä. It contains theses ranging from master's theses to doctoral dissertations, as well as other publications from the university.
The repository includes theses on topics related to music research and music education.
Taju is an open repository of the University of the Arts Helsinki. It stores full-text materials produced at the university, such as dissertations, theses, artistic research, parallel publications of scientific articles, publication series, learning materials, as well as digitized sheet music, audio recordings, and concert recordings. Some of the materials are freely available (Open Access), while others are accessible only with University of the Arts credentials or on-site at the Sibelius Academy Library.
Trepo is an open repository of Tampere University. It contains open publications from the university, including parallel publications of scientific articles written by university staff, other open publications, and theses. Publications from the university's ethnomusicology program can be found via the menu on the right: select Degree Programmes and Study Tracks and then choose Ethnomusicology from the list.
Helda is
the University of Helsinki's open repository, containing scientific
articles, theses, and publication series. Helda includes theses in fields such
as musicology, ethnomusicology, and the current discipline of Art Studies.
Helda also hosts materials from partner organizations. For example, the collections of the Labour Movement Archives include materials related to music, particularly music history.
OuluREPO
OuluREPO is an open repository of the University of Oulu. It contains a selection of theses and publications from various areas of music, such as music education. Since the theses and publications are spread across different disciplines, it is recommended to use general search terms and truncation (e.g., music, musiik or musiikkikasvatu) to find music-related content.
Theseus is an open repository of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences. It contains theses and other publications (such as publication series and parallel publications) from these institutions.
Degree programmes in music are offered at the following Universities of Applied Sciences: Centria, Jyväskylä, Metropolia, Oulu, Savonia, Tampere, Turku, and Novia. Music-related theses can also be found in the collections of institutions where music education has been discontinued (e.g., Karelia, Lahti).
To browse music-related theses, select "Performance art and music" from the Field of Education menu on the right-hand side of the Theseus homepage. More detailed search instructions are available there as well.
UtuPub is an open repository of the University of Turku. It contains theses such as doctoral dissertations, licentiate theses, and master's theses, as well as abstracts of master's theses. In addition to theses, the repository includes other publications from the university's faculties and departments. The University of Turku offers musicology as a field of study.
TIP! You can also search the materials published in repositories through Finna service by clicking on Theses in the front page. On the next page, choose "Esittävä taide ja musiikki" (eng. Performing arts and Music) from the Topic menu to get a list of theses as your search result.
